Vasectomy Reversal Surgery

A large number of men request vasectomies each year. Because life can change unexpectedly after a vasectomy, it is estimated that upto 5% of men will change their minds. Vasectomy reversal surgery reconnects the ‘male fertility tubes’ (called the ‘vas deferens’) that were cut during a vasectomy.

How its done

With the patient comfortable under general anesthesia or local anesthesia (with sedation), a 1-2 inch incision is made in the scrotal skin over the old vasectomy site. The two ends of the vas deferens are found and freed from the surrounding tissue. The vasectomy scar is usually removed. Using microsurgical techniques, the two ends of the vas deferens are then reconnected. The procedure usually takes 2-3 hours.

Am I a candidate?

If your surgeon has established that you are a good candidate for successful vasectomy reversal and you are in good general health, there is no defined age limit for this procedure.

Post-operative course

Performed as an outpatient procedure, most patients experience mild to moderate discomfort easily controlled with oral medication. Expect a slightly more prolonged recovery than after your vasectomy. You will likely experience some bruising and swelling after surgery that will resolve over the next few weeks. You will leave the surgery with a snug fitting scrotal supporter.

For at least two days, elevate legs, avoid prolonged standing up and use ice packs regularly to soothe the scrotal area. All activities, including sex and sports, can be resumed 3 weeks after surgery. Do not expect results to be immediate. It may be months or more before fertility and a normal sperm count is restored.

Detailed pre- and post-operative instructions will be provided at the WSC.
