Balloon Sinuplasty
The symptoms of chronic sinusitis can be debilitating. Persistent facial pain, headaches and chronic fatigue reduce quality of life. Up to 60% of patients with chronic sinusitis do not get relief with prescribed medication. For these patients, balloon sinuplasty, a minimally invasive procedure that opens the sinus passages, may be recommended.
How its done
Much like clogged arteries are opened by doctors during balloon angioplasty, a small flexible balloon catheter is threaded into the clogged sinus cavity. By inflating the balloon the walls of the sinus passageway are widened without damaging the intrinsic lining of the sinus. Once the balloon is deflated, the enlarged canal allows for better drainage of mucous out of the sinus cavity.
The duration of the procedure is usually 1 to 2 hours and is commonly performed under a general anesthetic.
Why choose us?
The ENT surgeons at the WSC have extensive experience in this groundbreaking procedure. Our team of anesthesiologists, nurses and caregivers are devoted to providing you with the highest level of care. We do our best to keep you informed, put you at ease and provide you with a satisfying experience.
Post-operative course
Performed as an outpatient procedure, patients experience minimal discomfort that is easily controlled with oral medication. While recovery time varies between patients, most return to normal activities within several days. You will likely experience some bruising and swelling after surgery that will decrease over 3-5 days. Soft nasal packing may also be required but should be removed after one to two days.
Detailed pre- and post-operative instructions will be provided at the WSC.
