Fat Injection and Fat Grafting

Our life experiences are etched in the wrinkles on our faces. As we age, the collagen-scaffolding and adipose tissue supporting our skin slowly break down. As a result, the skin loses its structure and begins to sag. ‘Frown lines’ and wrinkles can makes patients feel older than they feel. Fat implants fill out areas of the face and body that have experienced fat loss due to aging. The most common areas for fat implants include around the eyes, mouth, and cheeks. Because fat implants use the patients own fat, there is no chance of an allergic reaction.

How its done?

Usually performed under a general anesthetic, fat grafting is often done in combination with other procedures. Fat is liposuctioned from a fat-rich part of the body and once cleaned and any excess fluid removed, a small needle is used to inject the fat into the area to be treated.

The procedure often takes up to one hour to complete and is usually performed under a general anesthetic.

Post-operative course

Performed as an outpatient procedure, most patients experience minimal discomfort easily controlled with oral medication. Although the swelling may be slightly noticeable, it should not prevent you from returning to your normal activities within 48 to 72 hours after surgery. With time, especially if there is insufficient blood supply to the graft, some fat implants may dissipate. Overall, however, fat implants tend to be permanent and low-risk solutions to many cosmetic issues.

Detailed pre- and post-operative instructions will be provided at the WSC.
