Tummy Tuck

Abdominoplasty

Some men and women are not able to achieve a well-toned abdomen despite their best efforts with diet and exercise. Genetics, multiple pregnancies, and substantial weight loss can all contribute to the persistence of fat deposits, loose skin and stretch marks in the abdomen. Abdominoplasty, or ‘tummy tuck’, is a commonly requested cosmetic procedure designed to create a slimmer and firmer abdominal profile by removing excess abdominal fat/ skin and restoring weakened abdominal muscles.

How its done?

During an abdominoplasty, an incision is made across the lower abdomen beneath the bikini line. Loose or overhanging skin is trimmed away. The muscles beneath the abdominal wall are tightened and the remaining skin is lifted and reattached. In some cases, the naval is repositioned to create a more attractive shape. An abdominoplasty that leaves the belly button intact is often referred to as a ‘mini-tummy tuck’.

The procedure often takes 2 hours to complete and is usually performed under a general anesthetic.

Am I a candidate?

It is important to realize that a tummy tuck is NOT a short-cut to weight loss or a substitute for proper diet. The goal is not to lose weight but to improve body contour. If you are frustrated and self-conscious with persistent abdominal ‘sagginess’… If you are in good general health, at a stable weight and have specific but realistic goals for the improvement of your appearance… this procedure may be for you.

Post-operative course

Performed as an outpatient procedure, patients experience surprisingly minimal discomfort that is easily controlled with oral medication. Typically, small tubes inserted to ensure proper drainage are removed within 3-5 days after surgery. You will experience some bruising and swelling after surgery, as well as a feeling of numbness around the incision line. You feel unable to stand fully upright due to a sense of tightness in your abdomen. This is partly because of a tight fitting garment, similar to girdle, you will be asked to wear for 4-6 weeks after surgery. This garment will decrease swelling and provide abdominal support as you heal.

Following a tummy tuck, most patients are back to work within one week but should avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for 6 weeks. Scarring is inevitable. At first, your scars may appear to worsen 3-6 months after surgery. Although they will never disappear completely, within one year they should decrease in size, lighten in colour and once healed, be easily camouflaged under most clothing (including swimwear)

Detailed pre- and post-operative instructions will be provided at the WSC.
